According to reports, the Haqqani terrorist network’s two senior leaders have been arrested following a military operation by Afghan intelligence – national directorate of security (NDS) operatives.
The detained leaders have been identified as Anas Haqqani, the brother of Haqqani network chief, Jalaluddin Haqqani and Hafiz Rashid, the network’s military chief.
The two leaders were reportedly arrested following an operation late Tuesday night, Tolo News reported late on Wednesday.
The national directorate of security (NDS) has not formally commented regarding the detention of the two senior Haqqani network leaders so far.
The Haqqani terrorist network is accused of staging numerous cross-border attacks from their base in North Waziristan, including the 19-hour siege at the US Embassy in Kabul in Septemebr 2011.
Haqqani network was formed in the late 1970s by Jalaluddin Haqqani. The group is allied with al-Qaida and the Afghan Taliban and cooperates with other terrorist organizations in the region.
The netework is considered the most lethal insurgent group targeting International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Afghan personnel in Afghanistan.
The Secretary of State designated the Haqqani network as a Foreign Terrorist Organization on September 7, 2012.
